this drive is only used for storage, should i defrag it?
I gave it a try and the computer shuts down so that "no damage to the drive will occure"

Sounds like you may have errors on the drive, these will need to be repaired before you can defrag. I suggest running scandisk or chkdsk to check the drive beforedoing anything else.

By all means defragment the drive, it will help keep the drive in good order and speed up access. However this type of drive will become fragmented less quickly than a system volume so will only need doing occasionally.
