Disappearing window

Recently, for no apparent reason, when I right-click my desktop nothing happens. Normally a window appears which enables me to stop/start/change screensaver, change screen and appearance etc. When this first happened I don't know as everything else had been working okay. It was only the other day when I went to turn off the screensaver prior to defragging my hard drivesthat I realised something was wrong.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition, CPU, an Athlone 1900 XP with loads of RAM and spcae on hard drives.
Anyone out there with any ideas as to how I get the window back?

It gets rid of such problems.

Thanks Gaz 25 but I have disabled system restore as I use Roxio GoBack. Problem is I don't know when this problem first surfaced so I have no knowledge as when my pooter was working properly.

Do you have the XP disk? if so >>>

Go to Start/Run, and type

SFC /SCANNOW

Have the disk in the drive and it will drag any files it needs across. If that fails, then >>>

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

You will have to reapply any updates you have installed..
