Disappearing HDD

  sutemil 00:23 11 Dec 09

I have an old computer with WinMe which no longer starts up normally.
I get error 'HD was not found'.
I have tried booting from floppy, windows CD (cannot get into Safe Mode),with no luck
but if I go into BIOS and 'Exit' saving configuration (I have not altered anything in BIOS) everything loads up and I can use PC.
Is hard disk dying or are there some steps I can take to achieve normal start up ?

It may have nothing to do with the HD, but it might be worthwhile changing the battery on the motherboard.

At this age a battery is almost certainly living on borrowed time. By delaying startup at the BIOS stage you are giving time for a wakeup call to the motherboard.
