Suddenly my PC won't recognise the DVD drive. It insists there is no disk in the drive when there is.Can anyone offer any suggestions.

Sounds like it is just broke and you need to buy a new one.

If you are sure that the leads and connections are firmly and correctly attached, try uninstalling the drive from Device Manager and then rebooting.

Windows will Detect New Hardware and reinstall the basic CDROM driver, which is all that is required for any optical drive (rewriters use the burning program for their intended purpose).

Have you also checked out AutoPlay as there is a fix available if this is the cause and you can't get it to play?

Another thought is that some burning programs such as Nero control the operation of the drive(s) when in use.
