Go to run type in dxdiag and press OK, then in the directx diagnostic tool window, it will tell you in the system information section on the first page at the bottom, it says directx version, the latest one is 9.0, which is available from the microsoft website, hope this helps, let me know if it did.

Many thanks will have a go in a mo. What I want to do is load The Sims(I know very sad) It worked in windows 98se Old comp. But the sims runs on DirectX 7. Do you think this could be a bit of a problem? My version is bound to be a bit higher than that I would think as this comp is new.

The update to DX 8.1 should not cause any problems.

Using the Sims under XP might.

The Sims (plus livin' it up & Hot date) runs OK on DX9.0a so 8 shouldn't be a problem.

BTW it is on my daughter's PC not mine, uh uh, no way, no sir, not me...
