Direct Sound

  Taupe 16:44 21 May 06

Running WinXP, SP2

My speaker system is 5.1 but only 2 speakers are giving sound.

Clicking 'Advanced' in Sounds and audio device properties gives the response

'DirectSound settings not available'

Any suggestion, please, as to how I go about correcting this?

Re install the sound driver.

Thanks for your response.

Sorry to sound so naive, but where shall I find the sound driver?

My original driver disk is for Win98SE, since when I have upgraded to Win XP Home.

Would it be on the SP2 disk

try the website of manufacturer of sound card.

Try this to find out what sound card you are using and we can try to find the drivers for you, this assuming you have no joy from johnnyrocker's here

The sound card is Creative SB Live! (WDM)
using Microsoft Driver 5.1.2535.0 dated 01/07/2001
I did go to Creative site because the driver seemed to me to be old for use with XP but Creative ran its own check on the PC and told me no update was applicable, so ???

Try this driver,it may sort out your problem click here

Hope this helps

Thanks. I'm going for it. Unfortunately am having to use dial up for a few days so there may be a little delay before I can report back!

As expected, quite a slow job downloading 23Mb on dial up - but well worth it. I now have my speakers responding once again.
Very much obliged for your kind and speedy help, very good of you. Thanks
