dialup modem (not for broadband)

i want to buy a laptop/notebook and use this at home.i am not on broadband and do not intend to go on there.what i would like to do is be able to
dial up from the laptop.i have seen advertised a modem from BT, however feadback from a customer says it does not work with XP on service pack 2.
The laptop (the wife likes)is dell inspiron 6000.
which i'm told has XP on service pack 2,so what can i do.
ps. you can tell from my question i have not much of a clue about computers,i don't even know if i'm
buying the right notebook!!!!!!!! HELP

Every laptop / notebook will have a dial up modem inside with which you can connect to the net.

Just because one customer has problems doesn't mean that everyone else will...:-)

More likely that SP2's security features need reconfiguring to suit the circumstances in that particular case.

nobody would make a modem that did not work with mirosoft stuff.
