Dialup Modem noise through PC speakers

I recently installed a new dialup modem in a computer. While it works fine, when it is dialling in to the ISP, the sounds are heard through the external speakers of the PC. Is there any way of stopping this? I don't mind hearing the modem's internal speaker.

Haven't come across that before. I do remember a modem which was particularly noisy and a helpline gave me a command string edit, which behaved as a volume control from normal to off.

Sorry, I cannot remember which string, but it ended something like ^M0 where zero was the sound> off < setting. You are sure the sound IS coming from the speakers? ;-)

This will be a modem without it's own sounder/speaker - they do it this way to save a few pence on the cost of the board.

This page tells you how to set up the modem initialisation string for different volumes. click here
