Diagnosing possible hardware problem

  DiddyBoy 13:27 27 Nov 04

I've just built a brand new PC. Specs below:

Asus Geforce Mx4000 128MB DDR TV-Out Retail Box 65102
Western Digital Caviar SE 40Gb UIDE 100 7200rpm 8mb Cache - OEM
LiteOn 52x32x52x CD-RW Drive with Smartburn - Retail Box
Antec Slk1650/mt 350w Smart Atx Beige
Crucial CT6464Z40B 512mb DDR 400MHz PC3200 CL=3 Memory Module
ASUS P4S800 SiS648FX Socket 478 800FSB 3DDR 400 ATA133 NOT SATA ATX Motherboard w/ Audio/LAN 49473
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz Prescott Skt478 FSB800 1MB Cache Retail Boxed CPU With 3 Year Warranty

All installed with no problems..

Gone to boot up, fine it starts..

But what does happen, irregularly, is it will restart for no reason. Using the Microsoft's crash detect site, it comes back with a hardware fault.

Any ideas where I start looking from here?

Thanks is advance.

Not exactly the same but I fitted a Geforce Mx4000 128MB for my neighbours son and he started to get video problems. Downloaded latest drivers Version: 66.93
Release Date: November 9, 2004
and problem solved.

Thanks for that... I haven't yet got around to downloading all the latest drivers.. I'll do that now, install on Monday, and let you know.

If anyone else can come up with possibilities, it would be much appreciated..

A couple of thoughts.

It may be temperature related. Install the Asus Probe utility to check.

Check the Event viewer for errors prior to the restart:
Right-click My Computer/Manage/EventViewer/System

Double click any error and then the microsoft link for more info.

Prescott and XP SP2? there is a problem and patch for SP2 and prescott CPUs on the MS site.

Have you got a link for that?

I had already run the MS updates, and didn't come back with anything after installing the OS..

Thanks for that.. I've got it on CD now to take to work Monday and see if it's needed..

I checked the CPU/case temp yesterday and both seem fine (CPU @ 32 and Case 28)..

I'll check into the Evenet viewer again, and see if anything else relevant there.
