device driver could not be loaded

A friend's PC keeps restarting: telephone conversation, so can't "do" anything.Looks like a driver has been corrupted..will see the PC tomorrow, so would be very grateful for any help. Windows boots to desktop. The error messages :'C:WINNT/system32/lpdriver.sys'
'device driver could not be loaded' are the two messages they managed to take down. Also ' error status 0xc000012f'. OS Win2000. They assure me that no progs etc have been added/removed immediately before error.
Repair or re-install ( OS has been on for approx 3yrs). Have tried MSoft database and found similar but not same. Want to check out with xperts here before troubleshooting( safemode.....)

yet again. Looks like a good excuse to do a complete re-install. Obviously, the MS patches have not been applied as released, as it started 2 days ago. Will get the PC today to wipe and install XPSP2
Thank you for your help.
