Destructive websites

I've heard that some malicious website have things in them that can mess up your PC if you visit them. What is it that does this? Javascript? How can I protect against them.

1. Don't visit porn or warez sites.

2. Don't download anything whatsoever, no matter how tempting it sounds or looks, unless you are absolutely sure that you know what it is, and what it does.

3. Don't agree to the installation of any plug-ins unless you are sure what they do, and that you really need them.

4. Install one of the free spyware detection applications like Spybot from

also watch which "activeX" controls you allow your browser to run. If your security settings are set at default then you should be OK...
