Desktop refreshes when folder is double-clicked

My Acer laptop and my Novatech PC are both suffering from the same problem. When I double-clck on any folder in Explorer, the desktop refreshes and the folder doesn't open. If I right-click and "explore" through all the folder structure to the one I want, it tends not to happen My OS is Wndows XP SP2 and I have all the anti-virus, antispy and firewall stuff loaded. Regular updates and runs of these don't find anything. Any ideas?

I had this problem and it took me about a week to figure out that it was my optical mouse that was on its way out, but I can't understand it happening on two computers. It's just a thought.
