Desktop problem

  Spark6 10:23 05 May 06

Until recently I have been able to hide my desktop shortcut icons etc by right clicking the desktop and un-ticking 'Show desktop icons'.

This week, whenever I r/c the desktop the computer 'freezes', the pointer is replaced by the egg timer and I have to reset the computer.

Any advice on how I can cure this problem will be greatly appreciated.

start menu/run, type

sfc /scannow

have your xp cd handy

Ran sfc /scannow, no faults reported. Right clicked desktop, comp 'froze'. Would having an 'active desktop' have any bearing on this annoying problem? Help!!!

System Restore to a time before this started?

  Spark6 21:02 05 May 06

Sorry for the delay but the first Restore didn't do the trick and the second attempt resulted in a BSOD. I shall try again tomorrow and report back. Thanks.

Still no luck. Unable to restore to a date that may cure the problem. Any suggestions welcome.

this is down to windows explorer when this happens press ctrl>alt>del then click processes then scroll to explorere.exe click end process ignor windows warning it then should start the explorer.exe again it is a fundamental problem you may have to repair your windows installation.or you may be able to do a system restore back to a time before this started happening.

No luck Steve, the only difference your suggestion makes is that the egg-timer is replaced by a pointer. Thanks for your interest.
