Desktop icons gone AWOL

  silliw 22:05 20 Dec 05

My friend called tonight. His desktop icons have all gone AWOL leaving the standard windows square on screen. Has rebooted a number of times to receive an error message that windows cannot find Rundll.exe ( this might be rundll32.exe.)
He can run explorer from the start menu but when he tries to run an application such as winword.exe nothing happens in fact no exe's seem to run.

Is this a virus or Trojan??

your help would be appreciated.
