Hope someone can help with this. I'm using win95b and have an icon for The Microsoft Network on my desktop which i can't delete. It has no program linked to it. I've tried dragging to recycle bin and also right clicking but no option to delete comes up. Also the properties for this item are not available. How do i get rid of it?

Have you explored the windows\desktop and tried to delete it there?

it is a semi system icon and you will need to
download the tweak ui from the microsoft site. see link below

this mini programme gives you greater control of your p/c settings and will enable you to delete the icon
