I need help?????

I have an old machine with a 1000 AMD CPU running 98 that i use just as a word processor. I was working along quite happily, produced and printed 3 letters but at the end I wnet int windows explorer and the machine crashed.

So I rebooted now no icons appear on my desktop and when I selected a program from the start menu it will not open. This machine is not connected to the internet.

Any ideas

Sounds like a orrupt explorer file.

Not sure how to repair easily.

One method is to re-install win98 over top of old system this should replace all the system files but still keep your settings and added on programs like office etc.

Can you get Start, Run to work? If so type in the box

scanreg /restore

and click OK. This should enable you to pick a previous version of the registry from a list of dates.

Try restoring the registry. If you reboot the computer and press Del key till you reach the 6 option menu, go down to command prompt and enter.

Then type SCANREG/RESTORE and hit enter, you'll be presented with a number of dates, pick an earlier date that the computer last booted correctly.

You may need the space Scanreg /restore
