Desktop backup to laptop?

Hi Folks,

I’m on a budget so I’ve shortlisted a new Dell Inspiron 1000, IBM Thinkpad R40e and an Acer TM 2300 as a suitable laptop to backup about 20Gb of data until after the reinstallation of W98 on our ageing desktop. Also it means Dad gets to use a pc as the desktop is used constantly for student course work, etc.

Firstly, will I be able to backup in this way?, Will it matter that the OS on the laptop will different than the desktop and finally, which one has the edge over the other two? Portability and weight aren’t issues as such as I’ll be using it at home only, but upgradeability and the ability to watch dvd’s could be pointers to selecting the right one.

Thanks for any advice.

Alternatively, buy a One Touch 250GB USB2/FireWire 7200rpm for £150:

I have one. Works well, robust and silent kit.
