Desk top to Laptop

Hi,
I've been very lucky and have just got a Laptop (Sony Vio K215). Second hand but just like new. Cost a bob or two, so will eventually link it wireless to my home desktop. The home computer has a NTL cable-box. Not through the USB. All I want to do for now without spending any more cash is to link the two with a 'Parallel' cable.
Could any one advise the settings please? Any help appreciated.

Do you want internet connection sharing? I don't know that it is possible with parallel cables.

Thanks Diodorus Siculus. I'll give it a try.
