Dell wireless connectivity

I have a Dell XPS17, with which I keep having problems automatically connecting to my router. It has dual band wireless, as has my router. It works, no problem, if I set both to 5 GHz. My printer, however, is only 2.4 GHz. If I try setting everything on 2.4 GHz, my laptop will not connect automatic. However, if I first connect by ethernet, it will connect WIRELESSLY. If I then disconnect the ethernet, it will (usually) maintain a wireless connection, until I shut down. When I reboot, I have to go through process again, of connecting ethrnet, temp, to get wireless "going".

Checked wireless "signal", and internet availability, and full speed. At a loss to think what else to try. Have I got a hardware fault, and is there any way to check what?
