Dell vostro, intermittent LCD display

Hi, can anyone advise. I have a Dell Vostro A840 laptop,( not the best I know). But I have been having trouble will the LCD display, every time I turned it on within a couple of minutes the screen would go black, but you could just about see a ghosted image in the background. Sometimes you could get the picture back for a short time but not always?
Anyway I was thinking it was the LCD inverter or the back light in the LCD display? So I got a VGA cable and connected it to my desk top monitor just to check it was to do with the LCD screen, so I waited until the screen went black and connected. Anyway the display worked fine on the monitor but the strange thing is since then the problem seems to have gone away? can anyone make sense of this??

Maybe but it was doing it when nothing was being moved.
