Dell laptop RTC error.

  Peverelli 22:47 06 Nov 04

Dell Latitude CPX H500GT, Pentium III 500MHz, Phoenix BIOS (version A05), no OS.

The HD has been formatted and I’ve been trying to install W98 but on booting up I get the message:

"RTC mode fixed - Time and date may be wrong. Time-of -day clock stopped." and nothing else happens.
A quick search tells me that RTC = Real Time Clock and it appears that whatever is/was powering the cmos has now died.
Any ideas?

.. by the way, I've searched the motherboard for a battery and there doesn't appear to be one (or a spare 'space' for one to go into).

I bought the laptop on eBay and, surprisingly, the seller has agreed to take it back to sort it out.
