Dell laptop memory problem

  molar 13:13 15 Jan 05

I have just installed 2 times 128 MB of memory (it came with 64 MB, now uninstalled) into a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop. The machine works fine but on consulting System, it tells me that there is only 126MB of RAM.
Any ideas what is the problem?
The blocks were bought from Kingston and are those that are listed as correct for this laptop

2 (or more) possibilities:

a - one chip is not working (try both separately).

b - laptop can only use 128mb max (unlikely, I think).

You may have to go into the BIOS and tell it to update its settings. It may not have automatically recognised the extra memory. Alternatively, check that you have properly installed the memory - one may not be seated properly.

Thanks for the ideas.
The machine will take 512. I will try them singly.
Why does it show 126 and not 128?

Probably 2mb given over to graphics.

Many thanks.
One of the blocks is faulty and doesn't work in either position. I will send it back to Kingston
