Hello and good afternoon, my sister is having a problem with her Dell inspiron 1450 laptop...windows xp

I get the following message when i switch on the laptop: The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified. It may not be completely inserted or may have some other problem. Please read and complete the following steps in order:

1. Press the device completely and firmly into the bay.
2. Press the escape key...wait for the system to power down.
3. Press the power button to retry detecting the device.

Ive tried everything to no joy, and she has some important docs that she needs to access on the laptop.....any urgent help would be most appreciated!!!!

It sounds like either the battery or the drive (floppy or CD-ROM) is not seated correctly. Try removing each of them and inserting them again.
