Dell Dimension 3100C shuts down when usb ports use

  grahamturtle 18:20 05 Feb 09

my Dell Dimension 3100C has started closing down and restarting when i plug external devices into the usb ports. This is extremely frustrating for obvious reasons and I would be grateful for any advice as to why it is happening and more importantly how to cure it.
Many thanks

PS Does anyone know of any means of actually getting technical help from DELL UK without having to pay lots of money out first !! My PC is older than 12 months and it seems that they don't want to know unless you are prepared to PAY to fix what could be a simple software problem !!

I would suggest that possibly the power supply may be getting overloaded causing shutdown. Have you tried a powered USB hub to see if that is any different?

far as I know if you are not within a warranty period they don't provide help, though from their site you can eg download drivers if necessary, or access the Dell users forum.
