Deleting unwanted drive H in My Computer.

Once again I need the help of you kind computer specialists out there.
I look after a computer for a relative, and her use of it is work related. As she needed her documents backed up for safety, I installed a USB external SATA hard drive, which was installed in a hard drive case. This has worked well for a few weeks, but today when I went to check the back up system there appeared to be a problem.
It was not possible to back up to the external hard drive, due to the fact that the external hard drive in My Computer, was shown as Drive H.
When I installed it originally, it was Drive E, which was the correct name for the drive.
Even when I uninstall the external hard drive, and restart the system, there is still a drive H showing in My Computer.
I have double left clicked this drive H icon, but the system just freezes, and has to be retarted.
I have right clicked this drive icon, but again the system just freezes and has to be restarted.
Everytime you click on the icon, in either way, you are informed that the programmes is not responding.
It is obvious that I cannot continue with the back-up until this matter is rectified.
Can some kind person tell me how to rectify this problem, and get rid of the Drive H.
Many thanks to all who offer advice.
