Deleting hidden files in document folders

I have recently acquired a network drive where I intend to store my documents/pictures/music etc. I have noticed that when I browse my folders on the network drive, normally hidden files appear. They are mostly 'Thumbs' (which says it is a Data Base file) and 'Desktop' (which is Configuration Settings). These are all over 2 years old and would have been created on my old computer (which ran XP) and transferred across to my new PC (running Vista). It would appear that any new folders created on my current PC do not include these files. My question is - is it safe to delete them?

Thanks for that. I am always wary when it comes to deleting (normally) hidden files. Also interesting to read what they are used for.
