Deleting files in XP

I have noticed fairly recently that whenever I try to delete individual files by highlighting the required one, right clicking and selecting it can cause an error to occur.

I've tried to recreate it tonight and of course, no joy! I seem to remember that the "report to Microsoft" option appears. I allow the details to be sent and then a further error occurs with Dr Watson. The only way to proceed is to remove Dr Watson via Task Manager.

Has anyone any ideas please. I have tried SFC but without success.

is windows xp all up to date with service pack 2 and hotfixes etc.? click here

what does the error say exactly if you can remember?

try having a look in event viewer and see if anything is reported at the time and date that you had this error. click 'start/control panel/administrative tools/even viewer' and then click on the 'system' and 'application' tabs and look for errors listed with a red x.

I admit I have no idea what this means!

Can you shed any light on the matter please.

sorry i dont know.

dbghelp.dll is as far as i can tell by googling it is 'windows image helper' this is the faulting module reported above.

did you have any errors like this prior to 22/12/2004? if not maybe try system restore to before that date if you can and see what happens.

just in case, install or run an up to date antivirus and also scan for spyware etc. to rule that out as a problem with something like avg antivirus click here and run a spyware check with something like spybot and adaware click here click here update them all after install and delete anything they find.

try also installing the latest drivers for all your hardware and update any software you have.

as above not sure sorry.

I'm really not sure about "windows image helper", I was just trying to delete some files. The problem has definitely occurred before 22/12/04.

My NAV is kept up to date, and I regularly scan the hard drive for virus and Spyware using Spybot and Adaware. Finally, I do try to keep my drivers as updated as possible.

Any other ideas please. This is really quite annoying and it happens fairly regularly.

the only thing i can suggest is to wait until it happens again and the note down the error you see on screen exactly at the time.

sorry i cannot help anymore.

Thanks very much for your input so far. I'm sure that it will not be too long before it happens again!!!!!!!
