Delayed write error message

I am experiencing an annoying message which appears every few seconds everytime i do just about anything.
The message bubble says'Windows-Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file D:\(then the file description which changes constantly). The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere'
The funny thing is that the files mentioned are already on my pc, not being saved etc, and all work ok when i try them.
Is there anything i can do? I am sure my D drive is ok but i have backed it up just in case - it only has mp3's etc on it.
It is a 40gb drive in Fat32 format and i am running windows xp.
Someone at work says i could reformat it in HFSS format (or is that a bank?)but i dont see what that would do
Thanks in anticipation
