Defragmenting problem

For some reason when I try to defragment the hardrive on my laptop (win 98), though the program seems to start, it never gets past 0% complete. Any suggestions much appreciated.

1) Try doing it in safe mode. Reboot and keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen loads.

2) Use Diskeeper from click here (thanks to Eastender for that link).

Thanks VoG, but does that mean I will always have to be in safe mode to defrag?

Also, is diskeeper just and alternative to windows own defrag?

Before I "discovered" Diskeeper I always had to defrag in Safe Mode.

Diskeeper is an alternative to Windows defrag but interestingly the Windows XP defrag is a cut-down version of Diskeeper.
