Disable all programmes that are running in the background, Antivirus, Firewall etc.

Alternatively, run it in safe mode.

As the others have said, it's because something is running in the background and, unbeknown to you, has written to disk.

But, is it really a big problem? On my PC, when defrag resets itself to zero it then flies through the disk until it gets to where it left off, so overall the time taken to defrag the disk is not much increased. Depends of course on how often it's resetting -- if you can get to 30% it sounds like it's not too often.

I use Norton Speed Disk (part of Norton SystemWorks 2003) which doesn't seem to have that problem and defrags my 40gb hard disk in around 17 minutes.

lucylastic, give this guy a ring. He has still got a couple of Norton SystemWorks 2003 available for £20. Could save you an awful lot of time and frustration.

The easiest thing is to stop the Windows Defragmentation and use Diskeeper Lite (FREE)instead,it is much quicker and does a thorough job.You can get it from here and loads of other places
