Hi Guys. What is the correct way to defrag XP home.Have been told to turn off system restore, others say turn of av. I'm a bit confused ,please help!!

Just run it, as it is.

No need to do anything.

Definitely don't turn off System Restore!

If you find that it never seems to complete, run it in Safe Mode. To do this, reboot and keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen loads. Then select Safe Mode from the menu. This stops a lot of programs from running that might slow down defrag.

In addition to the good advice above you could also turn off the screensaver, as sometimes this can affect the defrag... turning off the AV can help too but , in the first instance do the above , just run it and see what happens first, only if there is a problem follow the above posts...

XP defrag is diffeent to previous ones.

No need to disable anything IMHO.

I used to have to run it in Safe Mode or it took "forever".

I now have Diskeeper which is excellent click here

I believe that XP's defragmenter is a cut-down version of Diskeeper.
