Defender error 0x80508012

I'm receiving this error since I downloaded this Tuesdays XP updates (and had an error on one download).

A Google search reveals this error occurs when you try to run a Defender scan whilst downloading definition updates and it suggests you try again after the download is complete.

However Defender won't complete it's scan and I think I need to download the definitions again.

Is this possible, I thought Defender downloads were to be just part of the normal update cycle.

The final solution, after looking at various postings on Microsoft Forums, was to uninstall Defender then reinstall a completely new version and allow that to update the engine and detection rules. All is now well but lots of people have had exactly the same problem over the past 36 hours.
