The default gateway should have the IP address 192.168.1.1 not 192.168.1.254 as your has.

I would reset your router to see if it re assigns the correct IP

  newkidonblock 22:05 20 Dec 10

Thx - already tried - on/off reset etc.

Have checked other laptops on same wireless router - they show Default gateway 192.168.1.254 also and connect to Intranet no problems.

  Taff™ 08:25 21 Dec 10

On a BT Home Hub the default gateway is 192.168.1.254 so that is correct. Try turning off all computers. Reboot the Home Hub and start them up individually commencing with the one you are having problems with.

  mgmcc 09:09 21 Dec 10

A couple of things to try:

1) Delete the existing wireless 'profile' and then go through the procedure to "Connect" again.

2) If you are *NOT* using a Homegroup to network with another PC running Windows 7, disable TCP/IPv6 which isn't required. (Homegroup networks do run over TCP/IPv6 protocol.)

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or modem that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.

Oops - appears to have lost first post which said:

Taff - thx, tried but no joy.nc

Mgcc - thx, also tried but no joy.

Manage Networks graphic shows:

This computer - ! (inside a triangle) - park bench (indicating public access) - X (indicat ing no internet access) - Intenet.

Following responses show Trouble Shooting details.
Apologies if a lot of information - trying to give all the help i can)

Many thanks for reading and helping.

Two questions:

Has this particular computer previously connected "wirelessly" to your BT Home Hub?

Does a wired ethernet connection work correctly?

  newkidonblock 09:26 22 Dec 10

Wirless connectivity worked fine since bought a few weeks ago - problem started when trying to download a large file on Monday.

Tried direct connection to hub (switched off wireless connection) - still no joy.

Have also tried:(tips from elsewhere)
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
and
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit

Further thoughts appreciated.

  mgmcc 12:03 22 Dec 10

Have you tried performing a "System Restore" to a time prior to downloading the file on Monday? It sounds as though something in the registry may have become corrupted.

I don't think "releasing" and "renewing" the IP address is going to help, because IPCONFIG indicates that the network adapter is already getting the correct addresses. These would be renewed again anyway when the PC is rebooted.
