Decent VGA mode?

I have no idea about the specs of this computer though its brand new so its decent. Can't help much beyond that. It has windows 2000 on it for some reason.
The computer loads up and then the screen goes blank if you try and start up normally, if you restart it and go the settings and turn on VGA mode however it works so I'm guessing its a VGA monitor whatever that means.
Some things I'm wondering-
1: Can you set vga mode to default?
2: Is there anyway to get VGA mode up to the stanard of graphics of normal?
3: Does any software work on windows 2000? Most exe's tried don't seem to work right.
