A friend has send me an 80 page .docx file. I have downloaded and installed the compatibility pack, but when I open the file it is still in gibberish.

What am I doing wrong?

I am onXP SP3 and still use Office 2000.

docx. files are created by Office 2007 and are not backwards compatible.

You can download a converter or ask the person who sent it to you to re-send it in 2000 format.

Thanks: any converters to be recommended?

if you read this document then it states that if you install word viewer 2003 then the compatability pack you should be able to read ***.docx files

Thanks I'll have a look at those.

The latest OpenOffice can read .docx files.

However, you say you have the compatibilty pack... the whole purpose of this is to enable older versions of Office/Word to read .docx files. I wouldn't rule out a file corruption issue!

Ask the person to send the file so the file extension is *.doc. Its easy to do and all earlier versions of Office will be able to read it. David
