Dead profile

I've no idea whats happened to this computer (its my mothers not mine, she says it just happened for no apparent reason) but for some reason the only user profile on it is not working.
When booting up we get:

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

All files from this profile still exist on the C drive however attempting to alter the desktop/empty new my documents fails- it reverts on the next boot up.
Is there anyway to restore the profile?
If not how would I go about setting the old my documents to beeing the my documents folder for a new profile (if I cvan create one, have not tried yet)
Also strangely nough

See if you can turn it back on. Go to Control panel/User Accounts and see if it has been turned off or disabled here.

corrupt local profile

boot into safe mode by tapping F8 key as it boots up select safe mode from the menu.

Log in as the Administrator, copy all files from your profile you need to another folder, then delete the the user account (Start - settings - control panel - Users Accounts)

Create a new user account (with admin privilideges) make sure you do NOT use exactly the same name.

Reboot and copy your files over to the new user.
