been called to look at an apparenyly dead pc. the user said it would not start up, and smelled of burning. i suspected a blown psu, so swapped it with a known good one to no avail. on putting the original psu back in,the psu fan and processor fan kicked in of their own accord, although the system was not booting up. the power button would not shut off the fans. the fans stopped of their awn accord after a few minutes.i disconnected the power cord and reconnected it and the same thing happened.can i be sure this will be a blown mobo, or could this be anything else. thanx in advance.

Sounds dead to me.

Hi, could be blown CPU, probably caused by extreme over-heating, hence the smell.

True - could be the CPU, but if it is, this could well have seriously damaged the mobo as well. Also begs the question why whichever went in the first place. I would recommend to replace both, and, of course, the heatsink and fan.
