my pc will not boot! when i switch on it gets as far as "searching for boot record from ide 0 - ok", then will not go any further. i've tried changing the boot order in bios to boot from cd (to try and run windows setup from xp disk) but just get as far as "searching for boot record from cd - ok". any ideas, anyone?

It may be due to a loose connection on the IDE ribbon cable. Take the case off and check all the ribbons/power cables are connected/seated properly both to the hard drives and at the mobo connections.

Reaet the BIOS (CMOS clear jumper on motherboard or remove CMOS battery for a few minutes) and retry.

Would expect corrupt boot sector on HDD to give first message but should boot from CD.
