Dead desktop

A friend has asked me for help with his laptop, when he boots up after entering his password he gets a wallpaper picture with no icons, toobars or anything, just the picture. I am stumped, I can bring up the task manager and there are no running applications and the processes don't seem to be unusual.

Any ideas????

Thanks

Something is preventing a correct boot up - try safe mode and see what is under

start

run

msconfig

startup tab

Disable anything new there.

Unable to right click on the desktop, the mouse pointer moves but doesn't accept clicking.

Safe mode is just a (small) black screen, again with no icons or start button?

Thanks

Bck up my docs, favourites, etc.

Using the administarator log on or another logon with admin rights, delete the account and recrate a new account with the same name.

Or

OPTION 1 - Repair XP by replacing corrupt files
Type

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

OPTION 2 - Repair XP by install over the top of existing systm

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Although I can logon, there are no normal options available, I cannot right click and there are no icons or buttons or taskbar. Therefore I cannot run "sfc /scannow"

When I try to "Repair XP by install over the top of existing system"

Prior to getting to the options :-

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

The screen goes blank although the power is still on. No keys or buttons bring the screen back.

I can boot from a Bart PE disk but can't figure out how to write to a blank CD (If all I could do is copy off data I would accept that then format the HD and reinstall).

Thanks and anymore suggestions

In the article you "click here" above, he specifically states that the "Repair" function wont work with a Manufacturer's Restore Disk. Is this correct ? and in an emergency can I use another XP Pro disk that is a genuine original ? This happened to a friend, and when he tried the "repair" route using a restore disk,he got a "access denied" message.

"in an emergency can I use another XP Pro disk that is a genuine original"

Yes this will work all you need to do is enter your own 25 digit Windows code off the sticker on the machine.
