De-frag question

  peterleemaxwell 19:59 21 Mar 03

I have just been reading in a mag.(Computeractive), that a person had a hard drive fail and asked if by de-fraging too much had done some damage.
I always thought about once a month was right but also seen somewhere in another mag., that had said once a week.
What is the general view?

As often as you feel necessary... weekly at least for me. It won't do any harm.

With Norton System Works 2003 I have mine configured to de-frag automatically in the background when the disks are 95% unfragmented. The system disk is 20GB, and the storage disk is 80GB.

I Defrag about once a fortnight and am happy with that.

I analyze my HD once a week and defrag when W2K tells me that I should. that works out at about once a month or so.
