DDR2 RAM and DDR RAM

Hope this is an easy question, will a modern motherboard that takes DDR2 RAM be backwards compatible with older DDR RAM? (assuming just the one type is used?)

No....DDR 184 pins DDR2 240pins , different sizes .

There are but you cannot mix the two types.
