?data loss/corruption from USB

I've been using my USB stick in a work environment recently.

IT came in and wanted me off the computer so that they could upgrade, so I jumped out the chair PDQ (as I'm a student on placement there rather than staff...)

The problem is that they pulled my USB stick out of the computer without using safely remove hardware, and now when I try to open previously saved documents I get a jumble of random characters and a request for the encoding, or the documents can't be opened at all.

I'm in the middle of running 'Detect and Repair...' from the MS Word Help menu - is there anything else I can try?

Thanks, those were both helpful.

Unfortunately I think I better begin typing, as the best I'm getting is:
