Data compression on internet with dongle?

I've switched on the data compression on my "3" dongle, by going into the 3Connection menu, advance settings and ticking the right boxes, but it does not seem to be working. I assume you should see some effect on images, such as a mosaic effect, is this not true? What am I doing wrong?

"I assume you should see some effect on images" - why? Because that happens with AOL?

My first posting on this subject could be taken as the compression is working, but as the images are not degraded I auspect it is not. As I assume there would be a speed benefit if this was working correctly, how can I achieve this successfully?
