I have just received an alert from my norton internet security saying c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe is attempting to access microsoft generic host process for win 32 services on your computer

low risk
tcp(inbound)

I'vr just installed xp and got all updates for xp and also for norton internet security.

I seem to remember something similar to this when I had win 2k and I permitted norton to allow this through.t was a virus which slowed my system down immensly.
good job I had an image.

Should I let this through on win xp?
thanks.

why not "block" it and see if everything continues to work OK?

As WinXP is based on Win2000 and WinNT, I would not suggest you let it through. Try and repair the file somehow, either by cleaning it (through Norton - don't know how) or delete the file and try to find a replacement as svchost.exe is infected, or scan the entire computer (with Norton) to find what is using the svchost.exe file for malicious use.
