Crossover cables for networking

What is the difference between a crossover cable & a straight RJ45 Cat 5 ethernet cable?

that in a standard network cable the arrangement of the wires in the jack at either end is the same. In the case of a crossover cable they aren't - the wires are inserted into the jack in a different order at each end of the cable.

If you use standard cabling connected to a hub, or a router the crossover function (the send/receive if you like) is performed inside the device, whereas in the case of a direct computer to computer connection it must be performed in the cable - hence the need for the special configuration.

Is that what you wanted to know?
