cross referencing on word xp!

I have had this problem before and now my gf is getting it.

whenever you cross reference a figure (say figure 1) in the text, some of those cross references introduce a huge space in front of it.
so instead of reading:

"see figure 1"

it would be:

"see figure 1" or something to tht effect. its really irritating. does it with all cross references and its a 100 page document.

anuone know how to fix it? (it seems to do it when updating all references like updating the contents page o something).

I've found that this occurs if the Figure being referenced is immediately preceded by a page or section break.
