Cropping to the actual image shape

I have Adobe Photshop Elements 4 and Photoshop CS2.
I find it easy to lasso an image and then to crop it, but I always end up with a rectangular jpg with the image I want in the middle. What I actually want is an irregular image, the shape of the actual image so that I can set text around it in a document. How do I get rid of the rectangular surround?

When you have the area you want lassoed, create a duplicate layer and invert the selection. Switch off the bottom layer and use the eraser tool to rub out the unwanted area.
