Crisp clicking noises

  ened 06:50 18 Aug 04

This started with WMP randomly freezing XP Pro (at the w/e).
Re-installed it (WMP) and it seemed to have sorted it.
Last night crisp clear clicking noises coming from the base unit (2persec).
Machine froze and forced to reset. Noises continued whilst searching IDE drives but had stopped by the time I got the case open.
Turned off and restarted from scratch.
No problem:BIOS:OK, chdsk: OK, Defrag:OK, no virus detected and the machine is working fine this morning.
But if my car had started making that kind of noise for no reason I would feel the need to investigate.

Possibly signs of an imminent failure of your hard drive.

Make sure everything is inportant is backed up and seriously consider replacing the drive.

I've got a 250mb secondary drive, is there an easy way (or a programme) which will move the contents of C to D en masse?

Norton Ghost will do it and most of the backup programs have a ghosting or cloning facility (DriveImage 7, Acronis etc.)

There's also XP's own Files and Settings Transfer Wizard from Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

A copy of Ghost was on a PC Advisor cover disk a few months ago.

Sorry, that should be a copy of Drive...

xxclone will also do the job and it's free from click here

The clicking is the sound of the read head trying to read the Drive. It may be just corrupt MBR

PS try running Scandisk

  ened 14:09 18 Aug 04

Excuse my ignorance but what is MBR?

Also I didn't know you could run Scandisk in XP.

I thought that was the same thing as Check disk.

How do you do it?

  Urotsukidoji 14:26 18 Aug 04

MBR = Master Boot Record
scandisk in Xp is slightly different and is called system file checker (SFC), click start>Run type SFC /SCANNOW,

to check mbr status run chkdsk with relevent switch, can be found by the switch /?
