Creative Zen Micro Photo problems

I bought a Zen Microphoto in October 2005, loaded the software as instructed but have never managed to get the device to work. My computer recognises the hardware and shows the drivers as correctly installed but both the Creative software and WMP10 do not see the device and the error response is "The device is not connected". I have tried the following:
reloading the drivers
rebooting my computer with the device attached
changing registry entries (on Creative's advice!!)
Loading the drivers and the hardware onto a friend's computer
getting a second device from Creative (identical problem)
The device did work as as a flashdrive, but I really did not intend to buy an 8GB flashdrive!!
I'm at my wits end now because I bought the original device in Hong Kong and cannot take it back. Any ideas?

thanks from a complete novice (so need help in layman's terms)

I'm new to this forum thing and I can't even see my posting in the lists. Can anyone see my posting on a "Problem with a Creative Zen Microphoto 8GB MP3 player? It's under "Your Postings" but I can't see it anywhere else.
