Creative Modem Blaster crashes PC

I have just added an external Creative Modem Blaster ( Serial ) to my PC. As soon as I ran the Install program the system shutdown and rebooted.
The same thing happened again but this time the blue screen reported 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' and further debugging info, including ' Beginning Dump of physical memory etc'

I restarted in safe mode and found that in Control Panel 'Phone and Modem' group was not visible.
If I leave the modem unpowered until after boot it works OK. I downloaded the driver from the Creative website and when attempting to install there was the same result.
I am running XP Pro on a recently built machine ( Abit IC7-G/Pentium 4-C 2.6/ 1GB DDR Ram )
Any ideas much appreciated.

Don't install the driver but let xp find and install the drivers, that way it will set itself up.
